Question 7 of 8
Services, recreation and public safety
As West St. Paul grows, which municipal services need the most attention or investment — such as fire protection, community safety, public works, snow clearing, parks, recreation or bylaw enforcement — and why?
- Dan Garcea
The Access Centre was intended to be the beginning of a broader recreation vision. I believe we should revisit opportunities such as indoor ice, soccer, pickleball, splash pads and other amenities based on community priorities and affordability. Partnerships, including public-private opportunities where appropriate, should also be explored to move worthwhile projects forward sooner. E-W Trails, park upgrades and additional street lighting are required also, which add safety and a healthy lifestyle for residents to be outside and enjoy. Many of the existing neighborhoods have not been kept current on these. Our fire department must also keep up with growth as they attend every call received as a paid on call department. Snow clearing has typically been rated as one of our best services.
- Mike Pagtakhan
First, public safety is my highest priority. I will ensure our Fire Department has the modern apparatus, emergency medical equipment, resources, and training necessary to deliver rapid, effective fire and medical response throughout West St. Paul. Second, road infrastructure. I am committed to increasing our annual road rehabilitation budget to proactively maintain and improve municipal roads, while prioritizing the paving of remaining gravel roads in Ward 3. Third, recreation infrastructure. As our community grows, we must invest in accessible recreational amenities, including an outdoor basketball court and splash pad.
