Question 2 of 8
Taxes and spending
How should West St. Paul balance keeping municipal taxes competitive with maintaining and expanding services? Identify one area of municipal spending you would protect and one you would examine most closely for savings or efficiencies.
- Peter Campbell
Residents work hard for their money, and Council has a responsibility to respect that. The growth we've experienced has allowed us to maintain affordable taxes while continuing to provide the services residents expect. I believe we must continue to focus on value for taxpayers and carefully examine every dollar we spend. It's difficult to single out one service because so many are important. However, our snow-clearing program is among the best anywhere in the region, and I am committed to maintaining the high standards residents expect for snow clearing, garbage collection, and recycling services.
- Jacky Maan
Residents deserve reliable services without unnecessary tax increases. Council needs to carefully review spending, set priorities and make sure every dollar is being used effectively. I would protect funding for essential infrastructure, particularly drainage and road maintenance. Neglecting these services only creates bigger and more expensive problems later. I would examine administrative costs, contracts and operational spending for opportunities to improve efficiency. I believe in spending where it matters, avoiding unnecessary expenses and making decisions based on long-term value rather than short-term convenience.
- Yadwinder Sadioura
As West St. Paul continues to grow, I believe growth should help strengthen our tax base and support the services and infrastructure residents need. My commitment is to work toward no municipal property-tax increase during the next four years, while maintaining responsible financial management. I would protect essential services and infrastructure, while examining administrative and overhead spending for efficiencies and savings before asking taxpayers for more.
